Welcome to the Kaaterskill Project
An interactive tour of Kaaterskill's landscape and cultural significance

Visiting Kaaterskill can be an exhilarating experience - visually, physically, intellectually, and emotionally. For over two centuries people have traveled here, en masse. Some have come for inspiration, others to commune with nature, and many to just be outdoors and have a good time. Over time its cultural and physical landscape has transformed from pre-colonial woodlands to the site of the first mountain tourist destination in the United States to one of the most visited state campgrounds in the country. Throughout, its appeal has remained immutable.

Change in Kaaterskill is inevitable. Whether changes consist of leaves falling off of trees or trees being cut down, they impact the experiences of visitors. The goal of the Kaaterskill Project is to help you understand how the changes that have occurred in Kaaterskill have impacted people's experiences there. This will help you better understand how changes made
today might affect visitors in the future. The Website is divided into four sections - each section an opportunity to learn about a different aspect of Kaaterskill. Explore Kaaterskill's magnificent physical characteristics. See how it has remained a tourist destination, even though accommodations have gone from hotels to tents. Discover how the trails and the lakes have changed without destroying the integrity of visitor's experiences. Finally, learn how Kaaterskill has continually inspired some of America's foremost artists and writers.
